Ryde liberal councillors

Welcome to the website of Ryde Liberal Councillors.

This site is designed to keep the community informed about important activities, events and issues in the Ryde Local Government area, and to provide up-to-date information on the actions being undertaken by Ryde Liberal councillors to best represent the interests of residents.

Ryde is a dynamic and ever-changing city and it is difficult for most citizens to know about the many changes and decisions that impact directly on our community.

Ryde councillors will do their best to keep our residents informed. This website is just one part of the process and has been developed at the personal expense of each of our Liberal councillors.

LIBERALS MAKE HISTORY WITH RYDE MAYORAL ELECTION

The election of Liberal Mayor Artin Etmekdjian in the City of Ryde has made history with local control of all three tiers of Government now in the hands of the Liberals.

Mayor Etmekdjian completed the hat-trick after the recent success of John Alexander in taking back the Federal seat of Bennelong from Maxine McKew, and following the massive swing against the ALP to the Liberal’s Victor Dominello in the Ryde State by-election two years ago.

History was also made with Clr Etmekdjian being the first person of Armenian heritage to hold this appointment in Ryde, and possibly Australia. He holds the rare honour of being one of the very few councillors to be elected as Mayor in his first term in office.

“I am deeply honoured to be elected as Mayor for the City of Ryde. I intend to help bring more stability to council and to be more innovative in the provision of services to our ratepayers,” Mayor Etmekdjian said.

“I will continue to support my Liberal colleagues and most Independents in their opposition to State Labor’s planning legislation that is having such a negative impact on our city, and back the many successful initiatives relating to sports lighting, youth sports grants, community engagement and promotion of Ryde.

He added that he wished to pay particular tribute to his Liberal councillor colleagues Clr Roy Maggio, Clr Bill Pickering and Clr Sarkis Yedelian, who had worked very hard for the community and faced some big hurdles to get things done despite significant opposition at times. “My thanks also go to Independents Clr Ivan Petch, Clr Terry Perram and Clr Justin Li for supporting me for this role”.

Mayor Etmekdjian has a clear mandate as Mayor after successfully defeating outgoing Mayor, Labor’s Clr Michael Butterworth, by seven votes to five. Clr Butterworth was elected as Mayor last year following a draw out the hat, but this time only managed to get the support of his Labor colleagues and the Labor-aligned Clr Vic Tagg.

Clr Ivan Petch was elected as Deputy Mayor, taking over the reins from the very successful stewardship of Clr Roy Maggio, who did not renominate for the position this year.
